1. Borno APC chairman’s 4-year-old son kidnapped
The Borno Police Command on Thursday confirmed the kidnap of a four-year-old son of the Borno State Chairman of All Progressive Congress, Ali Bukar-Dalorin, from Maiduguri Capital School on Wednesday.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Demian Chukwu, made the confirmation while reacting to the incident at a news conference in Maiduguri.
Chukwu said that the child was nabbed from school and taken to unknown destination.
The commissioner said the command had launched an investigation to rescue the child from his abductors’ custody.
He warned politicians against plotting evil against their opponents because of political ambition.“This is a clarion call to all politicians to always watch their back against their opponents. They must be very careful and vigilant at all times. Parents should also monitor their children and report any suspected individuals to the security for prompt action,” Chukwu said.
2. Aisha Buhari, Ugwuanyi’s wife distribute school materials to indigent pupils
The wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari and the Enugu State Governor’s wife, Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi, Thursday, rewarded indigent pupils in the state, who had resumed from the long vacation, with school materials, as a means of encouraging early resumption by students.
The school materials distributed to nursery and primary school children by the wife of Enugu State Governor during her unscheduled visits to three selected schools spread across the senatorial districts of Enugu State, were textbooks, exercise books, mathematical sets, mosquito nets, food flasks, and school bags, among others.
The schools visited were St. Vincent Nursery and Primary Schools, Amaigbo Ozalla in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Central School Ihe in Awgu Local Government Area, and Community Primary School, Owerre Obukpa in Nsukka Local Government Area.
3. Buhari names Campaign Organisation, appoints Amaechi as D-G
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of a campaign organisation for his re-election in 2019 with Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as Secretary/Director-General. A statement issued by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Thursday disclosed this.
4. Trump urged Spain to ‘build a wall’ across Sahara, says minister
President Trump recommended building a wall across the Sahara to solve Europe’s migrant crisis, Spain’s foreign minister says.
Josep Borrell, also a former President of the European Parliament, disagreed with the strategy.
The comments were came during a visit Mr Borrell made to the US at the end of June.
Mr Trump’s pledge to build a wall between the US and Mexico was one of his best-known election promises.
Mr Borrell recounted his conversation with the US president at a lunch event in Madrid this week, Spain’s foreign ministry confirmed to the BBC.
“The border with the Sahara cannot be bigger than our border with Mexico,” Mr Borrell quoted Mr Trump as saying.
The US-Mexico border is 1,954 miles (3,145 km) long. The Sahara desert stretches for 3,000 miles.
5. Burundi’s budding pen portraitist
Divine Nduwimana is the first woman in Burundi to organise a solo art exhibition, which opens next weekend in the capital, Bujumbura.
The 23-year-old specialises in pen portraits and she will be exhibiting artworks of famous faces, including Esther Kamatari – a former top model:
An agronomy graduate, she told BBC Great Lakes that she had been unable to find a job in the agricultural sector.
But her friends encouraged her to share her images on social media, and she is now managing to sell some of her works
Ms Nduwimana said she did not formally study art, but used to practise during her other classes.
This is why she sketches uses a pen, instead of a pencil, so that her teachers wouldn’t notice.
Her dream is to set up an exhibition centre, where people can go and learn about Burundi’s history through images.
